Dzień 46 (Chorog – Kalaikhum)

254 km, Chorog – Kalaikhum

Kilka rzek wpada do niej i to widać podczas jazdy. I te rzeki też mają swoje kolory.

Day 46
254km, Khorugh – Kalaikhum

Another day of the hard ride and beautiful views.

We rode along the bank of Pyandzh. The land on the opposite side is Afghanistan. In the beginning we saw only rocks, actually huge mountains, then gradually rode downhill and at around 1500m above sea level spotted some human settlements. At first, the houses were extremely primitive, mud huts, then appeared prettier, bigger, richer houses and corrals encircled by slender trees.

The Afghan side doesn’t have a good road. At first, we saw only an origin of the path. I would never enter it. It was a pass carved in rocks, actually a very high platform, one-man wide, and we could see people who were creating it. A madness. However, after a while the path becomes a sandy road. People start to appear, walking or riding their mopeds. Afghanistan, shit! We’re waving our hands. Their style of dressing is different from the Tajik. They wear white clothes and a headdress.

The Pyandzh isn’t beautiful. Its water is rapid and very dirty, it’s the color of coffee with milk. I wouldn’t drink it. Some rivers flow into it and we could see it during the ride. Also these rivers have their own colors. Mostly similar but one of them was red like watery beets. I have no idea where these colors come from.

The road from Khorog to Kalaikhum is around 250km long but its surface is either poor or tragic. It’s narrow, you must be careful because you could simply fall into a precipice. In total, we rode for 8 hours. Met a group of Russians on motorcycles and some cyclists, some of them were Poles.

In Kalaikhum we accepted the offer of a man who offered overnight accommodations. It’s not bad. It’s even very good. A beautiful place by the river, a tributary of the Pyandzh. The price is 30$ for two people with breakfast and supper. The price in a nearby hotel is 145$ and includes the same things.

Dzień 45 (Sovietabad – Chorog)

90 km, Sovietabad (Савеобод) – Chorog

Day 45
90km, Sovietabad – Khorugh

Our plans were more ambitious but we rode only to Khorugh. During the ride I felt that we need a day off. We didn’t relax in the house of our hosts. Somebody was walking and banging the door all the time, even at night. In the morning we ate a piece of home-made pie and drank some tea. Said goodbye sincerely, shook our hands and set off. They were truly respectable inhabitants of Pamir (as they call themselves).

In Khorugh we found a hotel in the centre for 25$ and with breakfast. Walked around the city for just a moment, bought a melon on the bazaar and some little things. We have a very good restaurant in the hotel and we’re dining there, don’t need to go anywhere else.
The city in itself is not so small regarding the local conditions. It’s located 2000m above sea level and during the day it’s hot. High temperatures doesn’t occur in higher ranges and towns located there. The city has two main streets along the banks of the Gunt river. Some kilometers away the Gunt flows into the Pyandzh river.

We reserved our breakfast for 7a.m. and then will ride north. We’ll find a place to sleep along the way.

So today we have a short, technical and regeneration-oriented day. We need such days more often. In the morning we will also have to get a good fuel because the one poured from the bucket by the old man in Murghab hardly combusts. The power is minimal, the engine has low idle speed and stalls during reductions. In short, a bullshit. But these are our conditions, we have no choice and pour anything available. The city has three good petrol stations and tomorrow we will know the quality of their petrol.
